Dogs Q & A

on maturity...

I'm a wild guy! I like to bark and jump at other dogs. My master thinks I'll embarrass him. Can I still come to class?
~ Sure! All dogs start class needing help and better manners. You'll act like all the other dogs. If you are truly aggressive we'll figure that out quickly and offer you another training program.

My master keeps saying a choke chain worked fine on the last dog. Will I have to wear one? They don't sound nice.
~ I've perfected faster, easier and less stressful methods than choke chains. They are an ancient tool no longer used by smart trainers. If you want to like training and learn quickly, a force-free approach does the trick. You'll get faster and longer-lasting results with my style of training, which is always choke chain free.

My whole family wants to train me. Isn't it confusing for the dog to have more than one trainer?
~ No. You need to communicate well with everyone. All family members should participate. Only one trainer in the family creates behavior problems and then they blame you!

Wow! I get treats in training? That sounds like my idea of a good time. Will I get them forever?
~ Correctly used food rewards are effective and easy to use. After you learn a skill such as sitting, food rewards are used randomly, just like a Las Vegas slot machine. (Your master will know what that means) Food is used less and less as training progresses, and you'll have to guess which sit might earn a reward.

My people dont want to show me. Is this the right kind of class for me?
~ Yes. You'll learns basic home manners such as greeting people without jumping up, walking without pulling on the leash and lying at your place while you they dinner. We're interested in how you behave at home, not in a show ring where you have a funny hair do.

Will I get enough attention in a group class?
~ Yes. My classes are limited in size. I know all the dogs and owners by name, and adjust the training to suit everyone's personality, likes and dislikes.

I was attacked by a neighbor dog and now I'm scared of other dogs. Can I learn anything in a group?
~ Yes. We'll start you a few feet away from the class and gradually move closer as you gets braver. But if you're still too scared after a few weeks, you'll do better in a private training.

I'm a Shih Tzu. Aren't I too little to be in class with Labradors, Goldens and Rottweilers? Or will I scare them off?
~ Lots of little dogs do well with big ones and enjoy class. If you seem overwhelmed, enroll in my next Little Dog Class where I emphasize housetraining, barking and biting as well as manners. And you can meet the Little Girl Dog of your dreams.

My master wants to send me away for training. I dont want to leave home. Is this a good idea?
~ Poor doggy. You aren't a computer to be programmed and "turned on" by just anyone. Sending you away to live on a concrete floor in a chain link kennel full of barking, lonely dogs is a bad and sad idea. You wont know how to behave when you come home. Dog training is best done as a 'do it yourself' project.

Will I be as smart at home as I am at school?
~ Dont tell your people this, but doggy school is really for them! If they change their habits, practice the skills you learn in class (and you can practice lots of them as they watch television) and make a little effort, you will stay smart at home.
